The heat is here, but that doesn’t mean your sense of style has to go out the window. Stay sartorial in your wardrobe with these six ways to dress well, even when it’s scorching hot outside. Clothes on, style points up… let’s do this.
LIGHT COLORS OVER DARK
There’s a reason moody colors are more popular in the fall and winter months. Ditch the dark colors this summer (they absorb more heat) and don your best whites and lights. Light-colored clothing will give you that bright and airy feeling synonymous with summer. Win-win.
SUNGLASSES/CLIP-ON
Doubling as protection for your eyes and a trendy fashion statement, sunglasses are your best friend (and accessory) this summer. Choose a style that’s always “in” like the classic aviator, a timeless shape that goes well with almost every outfit.
HATS
Right up there with sunglasses, a great hat is a must-have in your summer wardrobe arsenal. With so many styles to choose from, it should be fairly easy to find one that suits you. Try out a Panama hat or a classic baseball cap. Not only do hats up your style, but they also do the dirty work, protecting you from the sun and heat.
LINEN SHIRT
Linen absorbs a lot of moisture and dries quickly, keeping you cool and dry at all times. Its molecular structure also means that it can absorb as much as 1/5 of its weight before giving a feeling of being damp or wet – the perfect cooling system for the hotter weather.
BE LOOSE, DON’T BE TIGHT
Even if you don’t feel like you’re sweating, you still want to evaporate moisture off your skin. The loose clothing allows air to pass long the skin and exit, speeding evaporation and carrying off excess heat.
STAY AWAY FROM LONG SOCKS
There’s a reason splashing cold water on your wrists makes you feel cooler. Veins run close to the surface here, and it is an effective way to cool the blood as a result.
Ankles are similar. Keep them uncovered, to breathe and benefit from the occasional breeze, and it makes a disproportionate difference to how cool you feel.
Therefore, loafers or even espadrille should be your best friend with only ‘hidden’ socks inside the shoes.
